Pamoja International Voluntary Services has a started a music program for the less fortunate people in low income areas targeting the youth and young people to learn music. We have opportunities for music and arts for volunteers that involve spending time instructing a wide range of performing arts including assisting music classes or leading drama lessons. We have partnered with a music school that offers programs mainly targeting children’s centers located at the Kayole and Kariobangi slums in Nairobi.
We conduct basic auditions for students, usually ranging the ages of 4 to 17 years, and group them into various programs. This program helps with personal development for the under-privileged participants in various ways:
- Extra curricular activities are vital for personal development and we design an interactive experience to enable the students develop and discover more about themselves beyond just music skills.
- Help the children to discover and develop their musical abilities. It is exciting to watch students from distressed backgrounds discovering music.
- Music is therapeutic hence for such children from distressed backgrounds, the environment of learning new skills and instruments is a big relief from their daily less fortunate surroundings and routines.
